P&ID vs PFD – Do You Know the Difference? Many engineering students and even fresh professionals often confuse PFD (Process Flow Diagram) with P&ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram). Although both are essential engineering documents, they serve completely different purposes. A PFD provides a high-level overview of the process. It shows the major equipment, process flow, and operating conditions, making it ideal for understanding how a plant works. A P&ID, on the other hand, is much more detailed. It includes piping, valves, instruments, control loops, equipment tag numbers, alarms, interlocks, and signal connections. It is the primary document used for engineering, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
