Selecting the correct cable size is one of the most important steps in electrical system design. An undersized cable can cause excessive voltage drop, overheating, energy losses, and even equipment failure, while an oversized cable increases installation cost unnecessarily.

In this example, a motor is supplied through a 50-meter cable carrying 40 A. Using the cable sizing formula based on conductor resistivity and allowable voltage drop, the calculated conductor cross-sectional area is 7 mm². Since standard cable sizes are available commercially, the next higher standard size, 10 mm², is selected to ensure safe operation and reliable performance.

Cable sizing should always consider current carrying capacity, voltage drop, installation method, ambient temperature, grouping factors, and future load expansion. Proper cable selection improves efficiency, reduces power losses, and extends equipment life.
