Heat Transfer Made Simple – Conduction, Convection & Radiation Every engineer, technician, and engineering student should clearly understand the three basic modes of heat transfer because they play a vital role in industrial equipment, boilers, heat exchangers, motors, transformers, and everyday applications. Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact. It mainly occurs in solids, such as a metal rod heated from one end. Convection transfers heat through the movement of liquids or gases. A common example is boiling water, where hot fluid rises and cooler fluid sinks, creating continuous circulation. Radiation transfers heat through electromagnetic waves and does not require any physical medium. The heat we receive from the Sun is the best example of radiation.
